Ghana Citizenship Program

The Ghana Citizenship Program was initiated on December 28, 2016 through the "Right to Return" project by H.E. John Dramani Mahama when 35 descendants of enslaved Africans from the Americas and the Caribbean were granted Ghanaian citizenship. This paved the way for the Year of Return initiative, launched in 2019 to commemorate 400 years since the first enslaved Africans were taken to the Americas.

Role of the Diaspora Affairs Office

The Diaspora Affairs Office, Office of the President with the Ministry of Interior, is responsible for compiling names of interested individuals and facilitating the citizenship process. We work closely to ensure a smooth application process.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, applicants must:

Be of African descent, including those with Ghanaian ancestry
Have resided in Ghana for at least 5 years cumulatively (5 out of 7 years prior to application), with 12 continuous months immediately before applying
Have no criminal record and provide character references
Demonstrate ability to speak an indigenous Ghanaian language and show assimilation into Ghanaian culture
Show substantial contribution to Ghana's development

Application Process

Submit expression of interest to the Diaspora Affairs Office
Receive eligibility criteria and application guidelines
Submit required documents for review
Undergo background checks and review process
Receive notification of approval, if eligible
